YOUR FIRST DAY'S TIMETABLE

You should aim to arrive at school by about 08h45 so that you have the time to meet our Director of Studies, Richard . He will have a short, informal conversation with you to establish that your level of English is, more-or-less, what we were expecting.

At 09h00 the bell is rung and all students assemble in the lounge. Richard then welcomes all the new students and reminds the “old students” that we have a rule of “English Only” at school and during social activities.

Richard then calls out the name of each student, introduces them to their teacher and everyone heads off to their classrooms. The first lesson is always “Speaking Fluency”, which is an opportunity for the teachers to assess how well everyone speaks and understands English (without worrying too much about grammatical accuracy). It is also an opportunity to get to know the other people in the group and begin to relax!

First Day

By this point it's 12h15 and time for lunch. Kingsway has created a map showing the locations of popular restaurants, sandwich shops, pubs etc. New students can borrow a map and go off on their own or with others who would like company.

At 13h30 lessons resume. If you are in a group you are given the opportunity to say what you would like to do during afternoon lessons ie speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, pronunciation or a bit of everything! If there are particular topics or areas of vocabulary that you are interested in, now is the time to raise the matter with your teacher and group. The teacher then decides on an afternoon programme that tries to take into account everyone's needs and wishes.

Afternoon coffee break is from 15h00 until 15h15 and then lessons resume until 16h30.

On your first Monday you have an extra class from 16h45 until 17h30. This is to introduce you to the International Phonemic Alphabet (IPA) which is a useful tool for improving your pronunciation. All Kingsway teachers use the IPA so it is important to attend this class.

Finally at 17h30 your first day is over (although Kingsway is open until 18h00 if you want to check your emails).

Time to go home after a long, useful and stimulating day!

Coffee break is at 10h30 & lasts 15 minutes. There is nothing to pay for hot or cold drinks – you just help yourself. Sue (one of the owners) and Anne ( the Student Services Manager) ) are normally in the lounge mixing with all the students and trying to make sure that no-one feels lost. Some people like to chat, others prefer to read the newspaper, check their email or go outside to smoke.

At 10h45 break finishes and the new students go with Sue to Room 1 for their official welcome to Kingsway. During a 45-minute Powerpoint presentation, Sue goes through some basic information about Kingsway eg

  • Number of students in school this week & their nationalities
  • Opening and closing times, lesson times
  • Course types
  • The timetable
  • Kingsway's method for improving pronunciation
  • Homework
  • Computers
  • Worcester
  • Lunch time suggestions
  • The Social Programme
  • Host Families

After the presentation has finished, Sue takes the new students on a tour of the school to make sure they know where everything is and how everything works eg

  • The classrooms
  • The self-access rooms
  • The library
  • The telephone cabins
  • The lounge
  • The notice-boards
  • The kitchen
  • The toilets
  • Reception

She also introduces (or re-introduces) key personnel eg

  • Rich – Director of Studies
  • Emma – Office Manager
  • Rick – General Manager
  • Anne – Accommodation & Welfare Manager
  • Joan – General Helper & Sue's Mum!
