How we structure your course timetable

We believe that, for the majority of people, speaking and listening are the most important language skills – the ones most in need of practice and certainly the skills which are best improved by a course in England. For this reason we emphasise speaking and listening, although lessons do also include reading & writing.

Group courses follow a structured programme in the mornings to make sure you cover all the important skill areas, and in the afternoons lessons are tailored to the needs of the group as a whole. For General English students these will be general topics and for Business English students these sessions will cover business topics that are relevant to the whole group.

As part of our thorough and systematic approach to pronunciation teaching, all students take part in a special extra pronunciation class on  their first day (free of charge) to be introduced to the International Phonemic Alphabet.

The week finishes on Friday with a revision session followed by a “Friday Special” lesson, which may be a role play, a quiz or other activity to  get you to  use your newly learned language.

How we make sure you are in the right level class

On the application form we ask you to assess yourself between 0 and 10 for the four skill areas, speaking, listening, reading and writing. From this assessment we will put you into one of four classes : elementary, pre-intermediate, intermediate or upper-intermediate. On your arrival we can quickly and easily confirm your level through a short, informal chat.  The vast majority of students fall into one these levels, so please note that …

  • if you are an advanced English speaker you may find that there are not many students who can interact at your level
  • if you are a beginner you will need to have one-to-one lessons until you are able to interact at an elementary level and join a group
We always do our best to accommodate all levels, but if you are not sure about how you will fit in to Kingsway please contact us before you apply – we can make a telephone assessment of your level.

Learning materials that we provide and use in your course

We want you to feel challenged but relaxed in class because then you are most likely to make fast progress.

We do not follow a set course book; our teachers are far too imaginative to take such a dull approach! They aim to make lessons interesting, relevant and fun by using a wide variety of materials eg modern text books, current magazines, the day’s newspapers, TV, video/DVD and the internet.

Every classroom has a range of English-English dictionaries and we encourage students to use them during lessons and for homework. Once you stop translating and start thinking in English you really begin to make progress.

Materials used during class are included in your course. However, if you would like copies of books to keep, you can buy these from the school or local book shops.
