Every Tuesday afternoon we organise what we call the "Worcester Orientation Course". This is an interesting and enjoyable exercise which has 2 aims:
1) To help new students get to know Worcester .
2) To work with another student in English to follow simple directions and find the answers to some questions.
During the winter months this activity takes place from 13h30 until 15h00 to ensure that everyone is back in school well before dark. In the summer months the orientation course takes place between 15h15 and 16h30.
Most people return from the "Orientation" full of enthusiasm for the activity, having found it both useful and fun. Even those who have gone out in really dreadful weather! A member of staff checks the answers to the questions & discusses any points arising but most people get at least 90% right.
On your first Monday you have an extra class from to introduce you to the International Phonemic Alphabet (IPA) which is a useful tool for improving your pronunciation. All Kingsway teachers use the IPA so it is important to attend this class.
Time to go home after a long, useful and stimulating day!
At 10h45 all new students have their official welcome to Kingsway. During a 45-minute PowerPoint presentation Sue goes through some basic information about Kingsway, after which you will be taken on a tour of the school.
Time for lunch! Kingsway has created a map showing the locations of popular restaurants, sandwich shops, pubs etc. You can borrow a map and go off on your own or with others if you would like some company.
At 13h30 lessons resume until 16h30. If you are in a group you are given the opportunity to say what you would like to do during afternoon lessons. The teacher then decides on an afternoon programme that tries to take into account everyone's needs and wishes.
You should arrive at school between 08h30 - 08h45 so that you have the time to meet Richard, our Director of Studies. The first lesson on "speaking fluency" is an opportunity for the teachers to assess how well everyone speaks and understands English. It is also an opportunity to get to know the other people and begin to relax
Coffee break is at 10h30. There is nothing to pay for hot or cold drinks. Sue and Kathy are normally in the lounge mixing with all the students to make sure that no one feels lost.
